Production
[Page One] [Page Two]

There are three settings where Oriental rug production takes place. Located predominantly in urban and suburban settings, the workshop brings dozens of weavers under one roof. In the cottage industry setting, individuals weave rugs in their homes. There is also nomadic and semi-nomadic weaving done by migrant peoples on portable looms. Here at Kebabian's, we carry a large stock of rugs woven in all three production settings. The pictures shown here are from a Persian-style workshop production in Pakistan.

Dyeing Wool

Dyeing Wool:

Workers here are rotating skeins of worsted wool in a large dye vat.

Delivering Skeins:

The dyed yarn is delivered to be spooled in preparation for the weavers.

Weaving

Weaving:

This is an example of Persian weaving in a workshop on upright looms. Knotting is done very rapidly according to a design given to the weavers on a talim (or encryption). This type of weaving takes weavers about one month per linear foot to complete.

Washing:

Every carpet must be heavily soap and water washed after weaving. This is done not only to clean the carpets that have been on the looms for several months, but also to open the wool on the face of the carpet.

Drying

Drying:

After washing, the carpets are then dryed in the hot Asian sun to help bring out the true colors.
